Free North American Beaver Activities for Elementary Students: Teach Adaptations, Habitats, Niches, and Ecosystems

Kids learn best in specifics, so when teaching about big ideas, such as adaptations, habitats, niches, and ecosystems, I recommend starting with one animal and exploring all of these details through that animal. If your students can work independently, you can learn about one animal together as a class. Then, they can apply the process to another animal for individual practice.


The first step in this process is to build background knowledge on the animal. This process takes time, but it is worth it. You want your students to know enough about the animal that they can focus their working memory on specific details related to the larger topics. To do this, they need a lot of knowledge stored in their long-term memory.


I use a combination of videos, pictures, and texts to build background knowledge. Often, each type of media supports the others in building knowledge. Below is a presentation I would share with my class on North American beavers. We would go over the first slides together. Then, I would share the presentation with them, so they can explore the videos independently. This gives them choices in how they learn the material.

After my students have been exposed to direct instruction and independent videos, they are ready to learn by reading. Often, some of the information in the reading is connected to information from the videos. This strengthens their understanding and makes the reading easier. I would find or write texts on each specific idea I want to explore with my students. Below, you can see a reading passage on the adaptations that help beavers survive in their environment. You will also notice that I include photographs with the passage. This is another way to strengthen students' understanding of a topic.

The final step in connecting their North American beaver knowledge to an overarching science concept is to do something with the information. I often use writing activities from The Writing Revolution by Dr. Judith Hochman and Natalie Wexler for this purpose. These can include the because, but, so sentences or an appositive activity. You can see examples of these below.

I also recommend using note taking pages to help students focus on the important information in what they read or view.

By becoming experts on one animal, students are growing their science knowledge and practicing their reading and writing skills. You are integrating the curriculum in an efficient way that saves time and is fun for your students.

By integrating science, reading, and writing, you aren't adding more to your day. Instead, you are making each subject strengthen the others.
