Decoding the AR Sound

The letters ar are the most common way to spell the /ar/ sound. Around 90% of words with the /ar/ sound have the ar spelling.

The letter ar can make the /ar/ sound.



The word “are” is the only spelling of the /ar/ sound as are that I have been able to find. If you find another example, let me know!


We very rarely spell this sound with the letters ear. Look at the words below. Notice the letters making the /ar/ sound.
