The OI Sound

Updated: Aug 7, 2024

The /oi/ sound is called a diphthong. A diphthong is a vowel sound made by combining two vowel sounds. It is different from a digraph in which two letters combine to make one sound. For example, the ea in beat is a digraph because it is making the long /e/ sound.

There are two ways to spell the /oi/ sound. We use the letters oi to spell the /oi/ sound in the middle of a syllable.
